Instruction and Practice
in the Traditional Chen Style
Traditionally, tai chi is practiced as a martial art but has expanded into other domains of practice such as health or performances. Some argue that Chen-style tai chi has preserved and emphasized the martial efficacy to a greater extent.
A Little About Us
The art of T’ai Chi Ch’uan traces it’s roots back to a time in the 16th or 17th century, during a time of feudal warring and unrest. Originally designed as a method for physical defense and protection, it is thought to be a result of Taoist health and spiritual practices and fighting skills of the Shaolin monks.Chen Wanting is believed to have been one of the first originators of the art. He taught this art to his native villagers, who then taught it to their decendants in a direct lineage, which is maintained intact to this day at this village, known as Chen Village.
From this original version, other styles have developed, such as the Yang style, Wu style, and Sun style. The art that we practice in our academy is the Chen style in it’s traditional form. As such, this art is complex and profound, and includes practice of Chi Kung excercise, standing post meditation, Old Frame forms 1 & 2, and weapons training. Our Shifu (teacher), Kevin Chen, is a serious martial artist, whose studies included learning personally at Chen Village from some of it’s current Grandmasters.
